Who We Are

Allies for Educational Equity is a non-partisan, grassroots-funded political action committee, with a mission to unite the political voices of education reformers so that zip codes don't determine destinies.

Meet the allies and join us.

We are everyday people from across the country, each with our own unique lived experiences and entry points to this work, but who all share the belief in the power of knowledge and in the potential of every child.

Lea Crusey, Founder and CEO

Lea's career to-date has spanned the country, crossing the private, non-profit, and public sectors, starting as a classroom teacher, first in the San Francisco Bay Area as a Teach for America Corps Member, and then in Singapore. After graduate school in Chicago, Lea worked there in public transit and parking, in the public and private sectors, then, inspired by the film Waiting for Superman, she returned to her roots in education to lead state level advocacy for StudentsFirst in Iowa, Missouri, and Nevada on legislation advancing teacher quality and the expansion of high performing charter schools. From there she served at the national level as DFER’s Deputy Director and, briefly, as its Interim Executive Director.

Lea is proud to have served as an appointee for the Obama Administration at the US Department of Education, where she advised on P-12 education policy.

Lea holds a BA from Claremont McKenna College and a Masters degree in Public Policy from the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. She serves on the Boards of Trustees for the Center for Supportive Schools and Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks, and serves as a mayoral appointee on the DC Public Charter School Board.

Lea and her husband live in Washington DC with their two daughters.
